Bits of My Weekend

My weekend was rather uneventful, other than relaxing, sewing, and hanging out at the cafe. We all forgot that it was Mother's Day on Sunday until just a couple of days before. (I know, it sounds crazy, but it's true.) The church we attend here meets at 5 in the evening rather than in the morning, so after church, my sweet husband made sure that I didn't have to fix dinner. I love to cook, but it was nice to be able to just sew until the moment we walked out the door, rather than set my project aside for dinner prep.

I don't feel that I missed out on a Mother's Day celebration, though. I enjoyed the day, and my family treats me well all the time. I seldom have to fix my own breakfast, as Morgan and Craig Grayson do this regularly. I never have to fix lunch, as Caelyn and Morgan have this job daily. If I need my toenails painted, Morgan doesn't mind doing it for me. Graham or Gabriela will agree to rub my feet while I read aloud to them on any given day. Craig is always very generous and considerate of me, so it's not like I require special treatment on a particular calendar day.

I don't have any special photos to share other than this proof that I actually shared my sewing machine with Caelyn over the weekend. My motive was selfish, I must admit. I'm having her make a swatch book for me, and the cover is quilted. She's never done a quilting project before, so I thought this would be a nice, easy way to start that isn't too intimidating. It turns out that the squares are foundation pieced, which I've never done before. I've had it explained, but for the life of me, I've never understood the concept. Thanks to my beautiful guinea pig, Caelyn, it now makes sense. I hope I haven't scared her out of ever quilting. In fact, I'll need her help if ever get started on our Moçambican memory quilt. (More about that at a later date.)

It's funny how, as a mother -- and particularly a homeschooling mother -- even if I don't have a clue about something, when the children ask for my help, God gives me the understanding to help clarify it for them. I've had a mental block for foundation piecing for years, but suddenly when Caelyn needed my help in making sense of it, I began to understand. Amazing!

It was very tempting to just have her do this block the easy strip-quilting way that I'd normally do a log cabin block. But I was determined to get this foundation piecing thing down! Poor girl. She probably could've finished the entire cover in the time it's taken us to figure this thing out. If you're a quilter and you're reading this, take pity on us. I went on strike from quilting in 2002, and I've only made a baby quilt since then. (Admittedly, it's at a stand-still, waiting to be quilted. I don't like that part.)

That's about all I have to share for now. I did make an adorable apron on Sunday (and another one today), but I'm saving those photos for Amy's Sew & Tell Friday. Head on over to Michelle's Bits of My Weekend to see what everyone else has been up to. And have a great week!

  3. It sounds like you had a nice mother's day, and it was lovely of you to share your machine with a friend. I confess, I've been scared of foundation piecing for a long time, too. This may sound pretty dumb, but what's a swatch book? I've never heard of one before.

  4. One of these days I am going to learn how to use a sewing machine! If only so my daughter and I can spend time with each other the way you did this past weekend. Warms my heart!
